Product Details

Antique Chinese jewelry is incomparably lovely, with the most marvelous craftsmanship. Here is an exquisite Chinese nail guard converted into a brooch. The nail guard's silver gilt filigree is set with a vertical row of turquoise and coral teardrops. Blossoms are enameled in shades of blue, violet, and plum. A rollover clasp has been added. This striking piece is a nice size and weight for mid-weight fabrics. Circa 1920.

Nail guards are believed to have originated in the Ming Dynasty, but they became a cultural phenomenon during the Qing Dynasty (1644?C1912). The length and decoration of a high-ranking woman's fingernails signified her aristocratic rank. Nail guards were typically worn on the pinky and ring fingers of each hand, protecting fingernails that might reach up to 6 inches long.

Details: The brooch measures 3.31" long and tapers from .65" to .15" wide. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on your vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of the charm.
